Ask the Readers - The “Staycation”
Posted in Community, Living With Less |
Welcome back! It's good to see you again. Please note that I am now publishing all new material at my hub site: In Context Blog
From USA Today:
With research showing that many households plan to cut back on summer travel — a Rand McNally survey found two-thirds plan to shorten or cancel summer road trips — Wal-Mart is rolling back prices on everything from mosquito repellant to portable DVD players to baked beans and barbecue sauce.
So here is the question: Are you going away for a summer vacation? Or will you be staying home to see some things locally that you would otherwise ignore?
What do you think of this trend? Personally, I love it, as my lovely bride and I enjoy taking short road trips to neighboring communities and seeing what there is to see, enjoying lunch in an off-the-beaten-path cafe, and scoping out used bookstores.

My wife and I are going to Tybee Beach in Georgia (we live in Maryland) as a summer vacation. Well, it’s actually for our 5-year wedding anniversary, so it’s more a time for us to unwind and spend together outside of the confines of work and our 2 year old son.
I calculated the costs of gas, and we’ll end up spending more than $200 on gas alone, which is a staggering amount. To us though, it’s easier than flying, and probably a little cheaper in the long run. Also, we get along very well when traveling together, and can usually find our way without the bickering and blame-placing that is common with most married couples who travel together.

Good for you Benjamin, my lovely bride and I are going on 4 years, and we also have the good fortune of being able to travel by car for long periods and not bicker.
Have fun on your trip, and be sure to share your pics on Flickr!
